Getting Your First Texas Driver's License
A step-by-step guide for first-time applicants. Whether you're a teen, a new Texas resident, or just getting your license for the first time.
Quick Summary
Step 1: Complete Driver Education
Texas requires driver education based on your age:
Under 18
Complete a state-approved driver education course: 32 hours of classroom instruction and 44 hours of behind-the-wheel training (7 hours observation + 7 hours driving). Then hold your learner permit for 6 months.
18-24 years old
Complete an approved 6-hour adult driver education course. Available online or in-person. This satisfies both classroom and behind-the-wheel requirements.
25 and older
No driver education course required. You'll just need to pass the knowledge test and road test at the DPS office.
Step 2: Gather Your Documents
Texas DPS requires specific documents to verify your identity and residency. Bring original documents (no copies):
1 Primary ID Document
U.S. birth certificate, U.S. passport/passport card, Certificate of Citizenship, or Permanent Resident Card
Social Security Proof
Social Security card, W-2, or 1099 showing your full SSN
2 Proofs of Texas Residency
Current utility bill, bank statement, voter registration card, Texas vehicle registration, lease/mortgage agreement
Proof of Vehicle Insurance
Valid Texas liability insurance for the vehicle you will use for the road test
Under 18? You'll also need your parent/guardian with you. They must show their valid ID and sign the application.
Step 3: Schedule Your Appointment
Book your DPS appointment online at public.txdpsscheduler.com. Appointments fill up quickly, especially in major metro areas like Dallas, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio.
Can't find an appointment? Sign up for TX DPS Alerts and we'll email you the moment new slots open at your preferred location.
Step 4: Visit the DPS Office
At your appointment, you'll complete these steps:
Submit your application and documents
The clerk verifies everything and takes your photo and thumbprint.
Pass the vision test
Quick eye test at the counter. Bring your glasses or contacts if needed.
Pass the knowledge test (if required)
30 multiple-choice questions. You need 21 correct (70%) to pass. Covers traffic laws, signs, and safe driving practices.
Pass the road test
15-20 minute driving test. See our Road Test Guide for full details.
Pay the fee and get your temporary license
$16 (under 18) or $33 (18+). You'll receive a temporary paper license. Your official card arrives by mail in 2-3 weeks.
New to Texas? (Out-of-State Transfer)
If you already have a valid driver's license from another state, you can transfer it to Texas without retaking the road test. You'll need:
- Your valid out-of-state license
- All the same identity and residency documents listed above
- You must apply within 90 days of becoming a Texas resident
Note: If your out-of-state license is expired by more than 2 years, you'll need to take both the knowledge test and road test.
