Renewal Options

Fastest option. Done in minutes. No visit required.

In-Person

Required every other cycle. New photo taken.

By Mail

For military or residents temporarily out of state.

Online Renewal

The easiest option if you're eligible. Check your eligibility and renew at txdps.texas.gov.

You're eligible for online renewal if:

  • Your last renewal was in-person (you can't do online twice in a row)
  • Your license is not expired by more than 2 years
  • You're a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Your Social Security number is on file with DPS

Not eligible for online? You'll need to visit a DPS office in person. Schedule an appointment to skip the walk-in line.

In-Person Renewal

If you need to renew in-person, here's what to bring:

Your current Texas driver's license

Even if it's expired, bring it with you

U.S. Citizenship or lawful presence documentation

If it's not already on file with DPS (first REAL ID renewal)

Proof of Social Security number

If not already on file with DPS

Two proofs of Texas residency

If your address has changed since your last license

$33 renewal fee

Cash, check, money order, or credit/debit card accepted

You'll also take a new photo and pass a quick vision screening. No written or road test required for standard renewals.

Expired License?

  • Expired less than 2 years: Renew normally. No additional tests required.
  • Expired more than 2 years: You'll need to retake all tests (knowledge + road test) and reapply as a new applicant.

Warning: Driving with an expired license in Texas is a Class C misdemeanor. Fines up to $200 for the first offense.

REAL ID Upgrade

Starting May 7, 2025, you need a REAL ID-compliant license (or passport) to board domestic flights and enter federal buildings. If your Texas license doesn't have a gold star in the upper right corner, you'll need to upgrade during your renewal.

The upgrade is free when done at the same time as your renewal. You just need to bring identity and residency documents to your in-person visit.
